Neurologist

We went to the neurologist today for a check up. He is planning on Ruby starting the ketogenic diet at DeVos Children's Hospital on January 13th. He said we should plan on staying in the hospital for at least 3 days, maybe a few more, depending on how she tolerates the diet. He seemed to think there is a good possibility Ruby would do well on the diet; around 70% of people on this diet see a reduction in seizures. Hopefully we will see results right away, but he said we would for sure keep her on it for 3 months to see how she does. If it stops the seizures or reduces them drastically, then we would probably stay on it for a few years and wean her off her other meds as soon as we can. If she doesn't do well, then we would wean her off the diet and try something else again. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of great options after the diet so we are really hoping this works. Her seizures have increased a little in the past week, but that is probably because we are weaning her off the steroids. The doctor doesn't want to mess with her meds right now until we see what her body does on the diet, so for the next couple of weeks we are just keeping things as they are.

We continue to see smiles and hear a lot of cooing from Ruby. Her legs seem to be getting stronger, but her chest and neck muscles still seem very weak which has been affecting her breathing and swallowing. Also, because of this, she can't usually hold her head up. We are praying she gains strength in this area as this is a crucial developmental step.
