My Hero

Last night around 10:15 Tiger (our yorkie) started going crazy sniffing in the closet off our kitchen.  At first we told him to knock it off, and then we realized he was sniffing something that was alive! Mark got up and started moving stuff around in the closet; as soon as he did, a little mouse ran out of the closet, across the kitchen and then hid under the fridge. I wish I could say that I bravely tried to help Mark capture this little creature, but actually I just screamed and jumped up onto the oven where it couldn't get at my toes.  Eventually, Mark convinced me to get down off the counter and help him scare the mouse out of his hiding place. His plan was to have me stick the broom under the fridge so the mouse would run out and then Mark could trap it underneath a popcorn bowl.  After that, I am not sure what Mark would do with the mouse, but I figured having him stuck under a bowl was better then having him run around my kitchen.

After several stabs under the fridge with the broom, the terrified mouse still had not come out.  I decided that even though it was 10:45 at night, I was going to Wal-Mart to get mouse traps. There is no way I could sleep knowing that little critter could run right up my bedpost into my pajamas! The thought of that gives me goose bumps.

I got the mouse trap (well- actually 4 of them :) and a few other things and then I headed for home.  On the way home, Mark tried to call me a few times but our call kept getting dropped and then he wouldn't pick up.  I was started to get worried that maybe he had come upon a whole pack of rats and they were nibbling on his face or something.... I didn't know why else he wouldn't pick up the phone.

I finally made it home with my four traps only to find my triumphant husband waiting at the door to announce he had killed the mouse.  Apparently, Mark saw the mouse's head peaking out from behind the fridge, it's beady little eyes were glowing. Then, it came running "right at" him and made a beeline for underneath the oven. My brave husband scared it out of there with a stick and when it came scurring across the wood floor he was ready with a bowl. He trapped the mouse under the bowl, but then he didn't know how to get rid of it.  He grabbed an old cereal box, slipped it under the bowl, thinking he would take the mouse outside. Unfortunately, the little guy tried to sneak out and Mark had to step on the bowl to stop him.  To spare the gruesome details....the mouse is now in rodent heaven. I, thankfully, missed all the action, but tonight, I can sleep in peace knowing my big strong husband took care of the mouse.  (I did set three of the traps though, just in case :)

Okay, I was laughing out loud at that one - mainly because I have done the exact same thing many times! I always stand on something and scream and/or cry. I can't stand mice! They freak me out! Somehow I usually end up helping Paul too, though. Anyway, congrats, Mark, on killing the little guy!

Gives me the shivers. We had a mouse in our bedroom when we were in Africa. Trying to catch that little sucker was a comedy of errors.

Great story! When I was at camp about 25 years ago, I had a mouse crawl out of a hole in my mattress. Fortunately, I was just moving into my cabin and never slept on the mattress. They gave me a new one. I caught the mouse in my trash can the next day. Actually he crawled across my trunk and fell into the trash can. I had nothing to do with his demise.
